Sorry that it has been so long since I posted. But I got caught up at work. New projects, new obsticles, new solutions I should have posted. Maybe I will catch up later. For now, I want to post the basic introduction/proposal of my graduate project: AreYouAG33k.com!
AreYouAG33k is an online trivia game with questions targeted towards the technically inclined. The site has four (4) main activities: playing the game, chatting with other players, viewing high scores, and submitting new questions. The trivia game itself will have questions that are broken up into different categories (including but not limited to: Hardware, Gaming, TV/Movies, Internet, etc.) and level of difficulty (1-5, 5 being the hardest). Questions are not limited to the standard one word response; they can include: multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, identify image, etc.
To play the game, users will have to join a “game room” with up to 24 other players. Each game room will have a set range of question difficulty (easy, medium, and hard). While in these rooms, players can interact with each other using a simple chat window.
The game is broken up into rounds. Each round lasts a maximum of 15 minutes and users can join and leave at any time. The rounds have 10 questions each with up to 1.5 minutes per question and answer. Those one and a half minutes account for 15 seconds of choosing a category, 15 seconds to show the question, 30 seconds to answer, and 30 seconds to show results. Every question’s category is chosen (with the exception of the first) by the player who was the first one to get the previous question right. Questions can come from the same category a maximum of four times per round. The players that correctly answer the questions are awarded points based off the question’s difficulty. If there are enough players in a room, bonus points can be given for the quickest player, winning streaks, etc. Finally, at the completion of a round, players are shown statistics about the round (including top players) while they wait for the next one to load.
Since the internet is full of geeks, it seems only logical to allow players to submit their own questions (with a moderator approval). Each submission will require citations so that all answers can be verified. All submissions will be attributed to the user via their email address (if provided).
I’ve been working on the look and feel of the site and I have this basic design. I’m not 100% sold on the logo, I need to find a better font. Any suggestions/comments would be helpful.
